Phelps Memorial Cardiac Rehabilitation
The PMHC Cardiac Rehabilitation program provides exercise lifestyle changes to decrease the risk of heart problems, plus education for family and participants with heart conditions. These heart conditions can include a heart attack, angina, cardiac stent, heart surgery, angioplasty and others.
The program is designed to help you learn healthy lifestyle techniques that will prevent progression of coronary artery disease and help recover following a heart attack, cardiac surgery, angina or congestive heart failure. It will enable learning of new lifestyle habits and build up endurance, strength, and tolerance to activity or exercise.
To achieve and maintain good cardiovascular conditioning, aerobic exercise is key (walking, bicycling, rowing, jogging/running, continuous rhythmic dancing, jumping rope, swimming, and use of a cross-country ski machine). Activities that are not aerobic because they are stop/start activities include: tennis, golf, and weight lifting.
Our experienced staff provides a comprehensive program of exercise, cardiac risk factor modification and education for patients and their families.
American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation
The PMHC Cardiac Rehabilitation earned certification through the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation. This is the only peer-review accreditation process for cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs. It demonstrates that Phelps Memorial Health Center program meets current, essential standards for patient care and identifies the PMHC program as a leader in the field. Benefits of AACVPR Program Certification:
- Certification provides referring physicians with a benchmark to compare cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation programs.
- Certification demonstrates excellence for State Dept. of Health and TJC surveyors.
- Insurance companies recognize that performance measures in patient care are part of the essential standards required for AACVPR Certification.
- Certification gives patients and their family members confidence that the PMHC staff has the experience and skills necessary for effective care.
- AACVPR certified programs receive a listing in the AACVPR online program directory, referenced by physicians and patients.
The application process for AACVPR Program Certification opened in Dec. 2012. Then the completed application, together with supporting documentation and payment, was submitted in February, 2013. A careful peer-review followed (for 6+ months) and PMHC Cardiac Rehab was notified of approval on Sept. 3, 2013.
The Cardiac Rehab staff and leader worked on the documentation. This first accreditation was a lengthy process, including research, revamping policies, and more. Cardiac Rehab is very happy to be certified and accredited. The certificate expires in three years, so the team will reapply prior to then.
