Responding to medical emergencies is the
responsibility of local emergency medical services (EMS) systems. They
represent a coordinated effort among many different organizations to
deliver the best possible medical care to all patients. To help
recognize these emergency service, the week of May 19-24 is designated
Emergency Medical Services Week.
Local communities fill their local needs by using local resources. For
instance, pre-hospital care, one component of an EMS system may be
provided by a volunteer rescue squad, a hospital-based ambulance
service, a fire dept, a commercial ambulance service or others.
Holdrege and those in Phelps County are fortunate to have both volunteer
services and a hospital based service that provides advanced life
support. The hospital based service from Phelps Memorial Health Center
currently employs four paramedics and five EMT’s.
Last year, the PMHC EMS transported patients a total of 23,100 miles.
This included 500 total responses for the year, with 94 mutual aids with
area volunteer squads. |
