Nursing & Social Worker students doing internship at hospital.

NURSING STUDENT EDUCATION – Pictured here, from left, Ann McGowan, CNO, Phelps Memorial Health Center, and Maria Ritter, nursing student, have worked together to complete requirements for Maria’s schooling. Mrs. McGowan has served as Maria’s preceptor for the management requirements in her pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Maria worked on a patient safety initiative at PMHC which stressed the importance of communicating critical lab values in a timely manner, with complete documentation and she also offered improvement suggestions for the quality improvement project. Maria will graduate in May from UNMC, and also plans to do her transition from school to work at Phelps Memorial.

SOCIAL WORK STUDENT – Shena Thompson, pictured at right, is a University of Nebraska at Kearney student majoring in social work. She is participating in a volunteer job shadow with Dorothy Anderson, at left, RN, Social Services Coordinator, at Phelps Memorial Health Center to help her better determine which avenue of social work she would like to pursue following her graduation in December. She said there are many options available, including schools, Health and Human Services, retirement homes and medical. She lives in Holdrege with her husband Steve and their three children.
