Charles (Charlie) Brewster recently donated a photo montage of the Omaha
Medical College, Class of 1900, which features students of the college,
including his grandfather, Frank A Brewster, to Phelps Memorial Health
Center. Phelps Memorial is displaying the framed photo in the history
area of PMHC Art Hall, near the East Lobby of the hospital.
The late Dr. Brewster, 1872-1961, graduated from the Omaha Medical
College in 1900. He lived in Holdrege and traveled to several towns on a
regular basis to bring medical care to people living in south central
Nebraska and northern Kansas. He started the hospitals in Holdrege,
Oberlin, KS., and Lexington.
Dr. Brewster owned the first motorcycle in Furnas County, and had a 1905
Brush horseless carriage, which was also a first in the area. In 1919,
he bought an airplane for $8,000.00 to use for his medical and surgical
practice. He is credited with being the first flying doctor and also the
first person to use an airplane for commercial purposes.
Charles Brewster, Dr. Brewster's grandson, is a partner in the law firm
of Anderson, Klein, Swan and Brewster in Holdrege and Kearney.
