Phelps Memorial Patient Advocacy Program
PATIENT ADVOCATES AT PMHC: Lori Candy, Linda Reiser, Claudia
Philips and Rene' Engel are the first four Patient Advocates in this new
program. They are specially trained to work with patients and their
families to make certain the patients are getting all their questions
answered, as well as helping the patient with any problems they may
encounter.

When you are a patient in the hospital, your medical needs and your
questions are unique. One size doesn't fit all, and Phelps Memorial
Health Center is working to better respond to all patient needs. Phelps
Memorial has developed the Patient Advocacy Program to give each patient
one person to work closely with to answer patient questions as well as
provide information, understanding and support throughout each patient’s
hospital stay.
Specially trained Phelps Memorial Health Center employees will fill the
role as Patient Advocates. They are further educated to serve as a link
between the patient and the hospital. The Patient Advocates provide an
additional layer of communication between patients, families and
staff--helping with the vital task of keeping patients informed about
their care. PMHC begins this program on April 13.
The Advocate will take the time to listen to patient problems and
concerns, and then convey that information to the appropriate hospital
staff members and/or administration. By crossing departmental lines and
working with staff at all levels, the Advocate can help create solutions
prior to the patient going home. PMHC advocates will be a resource to
help patients connect with staff members who have the answers.
Patients at Phelps Memorial Health Center may meet with their Patient
Advocate near the time of their admission. At that time, the Patient
Advocate will share information and resources that are available and
assist the patient with identifying their needs. The patient advocate
will visit in person when possible and will also be accessible by phone
at any time throughout each person's stay at Phelps Memorial Health
Center.
