IMPROVEMENTS: The Holdrege Library applied for and was awarded

PMHC Foundation grant funds new furniture,
fountain and healthcare materials at Holdrege Library
HOLDREGE, NE — The Holdrege Area Public Library will be getting new
senior-friendly chairs for the reading room, an updated healthcare
collection, and an ADA-compliant drinking fountain thanks to a grant
from the Phelps Memorial Health Center Foundation.
According to Library Director Pam Soreide, the $11,949 grant includes
the purchase of six new upholstered chairs with slightly higher seats
and firm cushions to make it easier for seniors to get up. Two of the
chairs will have swing-out tablets to hold a cup of coffee or a laptop.
“We are excited to have brand new furniture for our reading room,” Mrs.
Soreide said. “I am hoping that the Friends of the Library can help us
with funding to recover the upholstery on the side chairs so they
coordinate. We are working on a whole new look!”
In addition to the chairs, the grant will purchase six upholstered
stools on casters which will be available in the stacks for the
convenience of patrons wanting to browse lower shelves or to sit for a
moment to read a bit of a book to decide if it fits their need.
About a quarter of the grant money will be used to update the library
collection on health care-related topics, an area which quickly grows
obsolete, Mrs. Soreide said. There will be new items on mental health,
diet and nutrition, exercise, parenting, and child development, as well
as materials covering subjects such as coping with autism, Alzheimer’s,
cancer, stroke, and other diseases.
“We are especially grateful for the money that will augment our
materials budget which had been trimmed in recent funding cuts,” Mrs.
Soreide said. “Our mission at the library can be summed up in two words
– lifelong learning – and knowing that we have the best, most current
materials on a wide variety of topics available for everyone in the
community is one of our main sources of job satisfaction.”
Mrs. Soreide said that a new wheelchair-accessible drinking fountain was
also included in the grant and would be installed adjacent to the rest
rooms.
PMHC Foundation Community Benefit grants are given to organizations in
the area to help improve the health and well being of people in the
communities that PMHC serves. The funds for the grants are allocated by
the Board of Directors and are a form of community re-investment. These
grants focus on health care programs, fitness, wellness, education and
community and are given directly to the organizations at the discretion
of the PMHC Foundation Committee and the PMHC Board of Directors.
Private donations and memorials that are given to Phelps Memorial Health
Center are used for the betterment of the hospital according to the
donors’ specifications and wishes.
