Patient Meals
Nutrition is a very important aspect in your recovery. All patients must have a diet ordered by their physician before any food can be served to them. For patients on modified diets, food choices may be restricted and/or limited. Patient meals are delivered by nursing, to rooms at 7:30 a.m., 12:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. For patients, who have been having tests or on diets that have just been advanced, meals are delivered by nursing as they are needed.
Patient Menus It is our goal to offer you a choice of menu selections. Dietary
personnel will bring a menu to your room in the afternoon if a diet has been ordered
for you by your physician. They will help you select your menu choices for
the evening meal, breakfast and the noon meal the following day. If you
are admitted later in the day or your diet has been changed you will receive a
menu for lunch in the morning. Patient Snacks
on some modified diets will automatically receive snacks between meals at 10:00a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Everyone with a diet ordered by their physician
will receive a bedtime snack at 8:00 p.m. Snacks such as: cookies,
crackers, sandwiches, milk, juice, ice cream, soda pop, etc. are available until 8:00 p.m.if allowed on your diet. Some snacks are available after 8:00 p.m.
in limited amounts. Anytime you wish to have a snack, just ask your nurse. You may purchase vending machine items if they are included on
your diet.
Patient Portion Sizes and Number of Servings
We realize you may be over whelmed with the portion sizes of the food received. We are obligated
through government regulations to serve you a well balanced diet with a basic amount
of servings each day. It is necessary for us to include 6-11 servings of
grains, cereals and breads, 3-5 vegetable servings, 2-4 fruit servings, 2-3 milk
and cheese servings, and 2-3 servings of meats, poultry, fish, beans and eggs,
unless we are limited by the diet your physician has ordered. A standard
size for most items is 1/2 cup.
Food Preferences
Illness may cause a change in your appetite. Food may not sound, look, smell, or taste appealing to you. There are many factors that can play a role in this. Some
of these my include: your current condition, which may cause your appetite to be
poor or non existent. Occasionally the sight or smell of foods can cause
you to become nauseated. You may be on a modified diet that will not allow
you to have some of your favorite foods or seasonings or the amounts you are
used to having. Some medications can cause your food to taste tinny or
metallic. We will do everything possible to provide you with tasty,
appealing, nutritious foods that are allowed on the diet as prescribed by your
physician.
Information If you have any questions about your diet please ask your nurse to contact
the Dietary Department or dial 2878 (if in the hospital) or 995-2878 from
