This procedure is used to “pinpoint” an area (or areas) that may not be
easily felt but is seen on a mammogram that may appear suspicious.
PATIENT PREPARATION:

1. Bring a relative or friend to support you
and drive you home.
2. Your doctor/surgeon will give you instructions on taking your
regular
medications and whether to eat or drink before your test.
3. You will be admitted to Outpatient Surgery to be prepared for
your procedure.
4. Mammography Department will be caring for you during your
localization
procedure. |
PROCEDURE:
You will be in the Mammography room, sitting down for your procedure. A
consent form will need to be discussed and signed. You will first have
your breast cleansed with disinfectant soap. This procedure is similar
to a mammogram EXCEPT your breast will remain compressed until the guide
needle is satisfactorily placed. During the procedure many images are
taken to assist the doctor on the placement. There will be final images
taken. After the guide needle is placed, a “wire” is left to guide
surgeon to the mass. During to biopsy, you will be in surgery and the
mass with the “wire” will be removed. Your surgeon will instruct you on
your after care and follow up appointment(s).
