What is an Upper GI/Small Bowel study?
X-ray of the stomach and the small intestine.
Who will do the upper GI study?
The test will be done be a x-ray technologist and a Physician's
Assistant..
How is the Upper GI/Small Bowel study done?
Images will be taken while you are standing in front of and/or lying on
the x-ray table. We watch the barium as it goes down the throat into the
stomach. The technologist will take a few more images after you are done
drinking the barium. It is possible that you may have to wait about 20
minutes for more images to be taken as the barium moves. You may be in
the Imaging Department for 2 hours or more.
When will I know the results?
A radiologist will evaluate the test and prepare a report to be sent to
your doctor. It may take several days to receive this report from your
doctor.
Please arrive at the hospital 10-15 minutes prior to your scheduled
time. A technologist will discuss your procedure with you, answer your
questions and take other information needed.
