What is a Voiding Cystourethrogram (VCUG)?
A VCUG studies the urinary tract including the bladder.
How is the test done?
During a VCUG, a catheter is inserted into the bladder and dye is
injected through the catheter to fill the bladder. The patient is then
asked to release their bladder and void the contrast as the radiologist
watches on an x-ray monitor. This procedure may be uncomfortable, but
not painful. For children having this procedure, parents may be asked to
assist in keeping the patient calm. Patients are not sedated for this
procedure.
How long does the test take?
An average length of time would be 30 minutes to 1 hour.
How will I get the results?
A radiologist will evaluate the test and prepare a report to be sent to
your doctor. It may take several days to receive this report from your
doctor.
Please arrive at the hospital 10-15 minutes prior to your scheduled
time. A technologist will discuss your procedure with you, answer your
questions and take other information needed.

There is nothing you need to do to prepare for this procedure.
