Pediatric Physical Therapy (PT)

Pediatric Physical Therapists promote a child's ability to function independently and participate actively in home, school and community environments. They use their expertise in movement and apply clinical reasoning through the process of examination, evaluation, diagnosis and intervention. The focus of PT includes:

  • Promotion of independence
  • Increase participation with the environment
  • Improve motor development and function
  • Improve strength and endurance
  • Enhance learning opportunities
  • Ease challenges with activities of daily care and living

Pediatric Speech-Language Therapy (ST)

Children who have speech and language problems often have trouble learning and getting along with others. Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) help children understand and use words and ideas. This makes it easier for children to learn to read and write, talk, play and interact with other children and adults. SLPs work with children with many types of communication and swallowing problems, including:

  • Articulation - How we say sounds
  • Language - How well we understand and use words to tell others what we are thinking
  • Social Communication - How well we follow the rules of conversation
  • Voice - How we sound when we speak
  • Stuttering and Fluency - How well our speech flows
  • Thinking and Memory
  • Feeding and Swallowing

Pediatric Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational Therapists promote skills for living as well as provide children with fun, positive and meaningful activities to help improve cognitive, motor and physical function. The focus of OT includes:

  • Fine motor skills and handwriting
  • Visual-motor and visual-perceptual skills
  • Activities of daily living
  • Auditory processing disorders
  • Sensory processing and Sensory integration
  • Motor planning and coordination
  • Splinting, casting and joint mobility
  • Wheelchair and therapeutic positioning and seating
  • Developmental skills and play skills
  • Adaptive equipment recommendation and prescription
  • Environmental modification and accessibility
  • Spasticity management
  • Neuromuscular re-education

Therapy services in the outpatient clinic can be provided alone or in combination with school-based services to improve function in all of the child's environments.

Therapy services are provided by order of the physician and are generally covered by insurance.
