Every survivor has a story. Every caregiver has made sacrifices. Every milestone reached is a victory worth celebrating.

This spring, cancer survivors across Central Nebraska will be honored during two special events dedicated to celebrating survivorship, recognizing caregivers, and bringing together those whose lives have been touched by cancer.

The first celebration will be hosted by Phelps Memorial Health Center on Thursday, May 28, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at JB’s Sports Bar & Grill in Holdrege. The annual Cancer Survivors Celebration invites cancer survivors and their caregivers to enjoy an evening of fellowship, encouragement, and a complimentary dinner.

The event will feature guest speaker Stacey VanBoening, APRN, of Phelps Memorial Oncology.

“Survivorship is about much more than medical treatment,” said Keri Berry, Community Relations and Foundation Coordinator. “It’s about celebrating strength, building connections, and reminding individuals and families that they are not alone on their journey.”

The celebration continues the following week during the 40th Anniversary Relay For Life of Central Nebraska on Friday, June 5, at the Kearney Catholic High School football field in Kearney, Nebraska. Survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and community members are invited to attend the evening-long event honoring hope, resilience, and remembrance.

The evening begins with the Opening Ceremony at 6 p.m., followed by the Survivor Lap at 7 p.m. In this moving tradition, survivors will take the first steps around the track as a symbol of courage and perseverance. Caregivers will then be recognized during the Caregiver Lap, while healthcare professionals will be honored during the Medical Professionals Lap of Honor for their dedication to patients and families throughout their cancer journeys.

Relay For Life participants will also enjoy an evening filled with education, entertainment, and family-friendly activities.

A special Mission Tent will provide information about cancer prevention, early detection, advocacy efforts, and support services available through the American Cancer Society. Guests will also have the opportunity to explore a giant inflatable colon exhibit designed to raise awareness about colorectal cancer prevention and the importance of routine screenings.

Additional activities will include bingo, a silent auction featuring raffle baskets, a remote-control car track, and the King and Queen of Relay competition.

Guest speakers will include Stacey VanBoening, APRN, along with members of LIVESTRONG, who will share stories of hope, encouragement, and survivorship.

Food vendors will offer burgers and shaved ice throughout the evening, with complimentary meals available for cancer survivors and healthcare workers.

The evening will conclude with the Luminaria Ceremony, one of Relay For Life’s most meaningful traditions. As luminaria illuminate the track, participants will honor loved ones lost to cancer, celebrate survivors, and recognize those currently fighting the disease.

Together, these two events provide opportunities for survivors and caregivers to connect with others who understand the challenges of cancer while celebrating the strength, perseverance, and hope that define the survivorship journey.
