Over the past several weeks, the Phelps Memorial Health Center leadership team worked to create a schedule to vaccinate teammates. On Wednesday, December 23rd, we received 20 vials of the COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna. On day one, twelve teammates volunteered to be the first to receive the vaccine.  Dozens of others have since volunteered to receive the vaccine as well.

Tesha Broadfoot, Chief Nursing Officer, was an integral part of the vaccination plan. “We expected to receive our first shipment in mid-January. When we received confirmation of 20 vials from Moderna last week, we went to work immediately to implement our plan,” she stated, “we were able to get twelve doses from the first vial.”

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine is a series of two doses administered one month apart. Teammates from our emergency department, EMS, surgery, respiratory therapy and Phelps Medical Group lined up to receive their first vaccination. They’ll be back in thirty days to receive the second dose.

Priority will be given to our clinical teammates for the remaining doses over the next several days. It is unclear as to when the vaccines will be available to the general public. The FDA has authorized the emergency use of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for individuals 18 years of age and older.

The State of Nebraska has released a three-phase distribution plan beginning with healthcare personnel, long term care facility residents and employees, and volunteer EMS. The second phase is expected to include first responders, the education sector, food and agriculture, utilities and transportation. The last phase is expected to be released to people ages 65 or older and vulnerable populations.
