Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT)
What is a Pulmonary Function Test?
A pulmonary function test, or PFT, is a group of tests used to measure how well your lungs are working. Testing evaluates how well you are able to breathe and how effectively your lungs supply oxygen to the rest of your body.
Why Would I Need a Pulmonary Function Test?
Your provider may order pulmonary function testing if you are experiencing symptoms of a lung or breathing problem, as part of a routine physical, or to evaluate how well your lungs are functioning before surgery.
Sleep Studies
Phelps Memorial Health Center offers home sleep studies and in-hospital sleep studies to help evaluate sleep-related breathing problems and other sleep disorders. A sleep study may be recommended if you experience symptoms such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing or gasping while sleeping, difficulty falling or staying asleep, or excessive daytime sleepiness and fatigue. A provider referral is required.
When Should I Consider a Sleep Study?
Talk with your healthcare provider about a sleep evaluation if you:
- Snore regularly
- Have been told you stop breathing or gasp while sleeping
- Have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep
- Experience uncomfortable or restless sensations in your legs at night
- Wake up feeling tired or have difficulty functioning during the day
- Frequently fall asleep while watching TV or during other daytime activities
- Experience ongoing sleepiness or fatigue
