Research shows that mental illnesses are common in the United States, affecting tens of millions of people each year. Estimates suggest that only half of people with mental illnesses receive treatment.  Illnesses can include depression, mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and more.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, major depression is one of the most common mental disorders in the United States.

If you or someone you know has a mental illness, is struggling emotionally, or has concerns about their mental health, there are ways to get help.

It can sometimes be difficult to know where to start when looking for mental health care, but contacting your local medical provider is a good place to start.

Your medical provider can be an important resource, providing initial mental health screenings and referrals to mental health specialists. If you have an appointment with your primary care provider, bring up your mental health concerns and ask for help.
