Thoughts of backyard barbeques, parades, and fireworks are swimming around our heads as the 4th of July draws near. Fireworks can be described as beautiful and magical, however, they can cause serious injuries if handled incorrectly.

Emergency room medical provider Rochelle Herrada, APRN, stated, “While fireworks are a staple for the holiday celebration anyone utilizing fireworks should practice firework safety to ensure fun instead of a trip to the emergency room this Independence Day.”

Firework safety tips:

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks
  • Older children should use fireworks only under close adult supervision
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol
  • Wear protective eyewear while using fireworks
  • Never hold a lit firework in your hand
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a firework when lighting the fuse
  • Back away to a safe distance immediately after lighting a firework
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person

“While lighting fireworks at home is common another option to consider is attending a local fireworks show where you can watch the display from the safety of a lawn chair,” said Mrs. Herrada.

While the safest option is to visit a fireworks show put on by professionals you can reduce your risk of injury by practicing firework safety, especially when lighting fireworks. In the event of a firework-related burn, there are some actions you can take to treat the wound:

  • Remove any clothing from the burned area
  • Clean the wound with mild soap and cool water
  • Present to the emergency room for evaluation
    • If the wound is larger than the size of your palm
    • If the burn is around the eyes, nose, ears, toes, or fingers regardless of size
  • Monitor the wound over the next several days for signs of infection including redness, swelling, warmth, creamy drainage.

In the event that a finger, toe, or other appendage is removed from the body take the following steps:

  • Place the appendage in a clean plastic bag
  • Do not put the appendage on ice as this can damage the tissue
  • Call 911 to take the victim to the nearest emergency room0

The 4th of July is a time for celebration. Understanding the dangers of fireworks can help prevent injuries and keep you and your family safe while celebrating this holiday season.
