There’s no better way to cool off on a hot July day than jumping into a swimming pool.  Phelps Memorial is proud to sponsor free swimming at area swimming pools on Friday, July 11 in honor of National Swimming Pool Day.
But we’re doing more than just helping you beat the heat, we’re also raising awareness about the importance of water safety for kids, families, and communities.

Swimming is a great way to stay active and have fun, but it comes with risks if proper precautions aren’t taken. Whether you’re heading to the pool, lake, or backyard sprinkler this summer, make sure safety stays front and center.

Why Water Safety Matters

Every year, thousands of preventable water-related injuries and deaths occur, many involving children. According to the CDC:
    •    Drowning is the leading cause of injury death for children ages 1–4.
    •    Most drownings in young children happen in residential swimming pools.
    •    For every child who dies from drowning, another five receive emergency care for nonfatal submersion injuries.

The good news? Drowning is preventable. Simple precautions and awareness can make a big difference.

Free Swim Day - Where to Go

To encourage safe fun in the sun, Phelps Memorial Health Center has partnered with 12 area swimming pools to offer free admission all day on Friday, July 11. Just show up ready to swim and stay cool!

Participating pools include: Arapahoe, Axtell, Bertrand, Beaver City, Cambridge, Elm Creek, Elwood, Franklin, Hildreth, Holdrege, Oxford, and Wilcox.

Top Water Safety Tips for Every Age

Here are some essential water safety guidelines you can follow this summer — whether you’re splashing in a kiddie pool or lounging at the lake.

For Infants & Toddlers
    •    Always stay within arm’s reach. Supervise young children closely anytime they are near water, even a bucket or bathtub.
    •    Use life jackets for non-swimmers, especially near lakes or deep water.
    •    Enroll kids in infant and toddler swim classes that focus on water familiarity and safety.

For Kids & Families
    •    Never leave children unattended near water. Drowning can happen silently in seconds.
    •    Teach children to always ask for permission before going near water.
    •    Make sure children know how to float, tread water, and swim to the wall.
    •    Encourage swimming in designated areas with a lifeguard when possible.
    •    Avoid rough play like dunking or pushing.

For Teens & Adults
    •    Don’t swim alone. Always swim with a buddy, no matter your age or experience level.
    •    Avoid alcohol when swimming or supervising children.
    •    Learn CPR. It could save a life in an emergency.
    •    Know your limits and be cautious in unfamiliar or natural water areas, which may have hidden hazards.

Learn More: Swim Lessons and CPR

Education is one of the best ways to protect your family. Here’s how to take water safety to the next level:
    •    Enroll children in swim lessons. Many area pools and YMCA programs offer affordable options.
    •    Take a CPR class. Seconds count in a water emergency, and CPR can be a life-saving skill.  Find a CPR class at             www.PhelpsMemorial.com
